Cosmology East and West

Many people are very happy to be moving out of the year of the Rooster and his capricious ways, ever pecking and crowing with a method known only to him. The advent of the loyal Dog, friend to humans, symbol to many of unconditional love seems like a welcome change. We also move from the unstable nature of Fire to the more stable nature of Earth. We move from Yin to Yang. The Dog represents honesty, fairness and commitment. Coupled with the energy of Earth, this year promises to be a stable one, a year for completion and taking stock of our lives. This year promises healing from the chaos of the Fire Rooster with the promise that careful planning can result in great benefit.

Looking at the Dog, one sees a pack animal. One observes a very structured order in the dog pack. There is the alpha pair, male and female, then everybody else. This structure is for the good of the entire pack. The Alphas are so because of their superior abilities, mental or physical. Their leadership is good for the entire pack. Only the strongest males mate with the alpha female, and he does so at his own peril. This structure is a call for us all to structure our lives for the good. In the microcosm of our own psyche, what are the alpha qualities? Are there both male and female, thus balanced? (Yin and Yang) Are these qualitative ones which we can put at the service of humanity, or are they selfish ones? Are we motivated by altruistic desires, or by fear?

No discussion of the dog would be complete without acknowledging that this animal has become a penultimate companion to humans. They serve us without question and hold unfailing loyalty. They become our best friends, as well as our teachers. Someone once said to me that dogs teach us things we don’t even know we need to learn. So what will you learn this year? To what will you hold steadfast this year? This is an important question for everyone, but especially for those born in a Dog year.

There are many breeds of dog. A Yang Earth Dog would be more of a St Bernard, an English bulldog, a Burmese Mountain dog or a Newfoundland rather than a Chihuahua, Maltese or Jack Russell. Will your year have the quality of the massive form of the St. Bernard, or will your year look more like the tiny Chihuahua who has such massive spirit?

The Earth element corresponds to the planet Saturn and the colors gold or brown. The Western astrological explanation of the influence of Saturn pairs nicely with the Earth of Chinese Astrology. In the influence of Saturn, we experience our limits. Limits can manifest various ways – too much limitation, self-imposed or externally imposed, actual or perceived, or too few limits – lack of focus – flightiness and lack of grounding. Saturn represents conscience and moral convictions. Saturn will test our powers of endurance and focus. It teaches patience ad reserve. It represents laws and rules which we can choose to obey or not. This is the balance between Justice and Mercy, a balance of Heaven and Earth, Masculine and Feminine, Yin and Yang. The emotions associated with the Earth Element include obsession, worry, OCD, smothering rather than nurturing. Once balance is gained, we achieve the virtue of trust inasmuch as we are certain of ourselves and our moral convictions.

This year is a double Earth year in Chinese Astrology. The year flows to Earth influence in the 60-year luck cycle and the Dog is naturally an earth element in the 24 Mountains of the Compass. Put another way, for each year, there is a heavenly and earthly influence of the 5 Elements. This year, both Heavenly and Earthly elements are Earth, as opposed to one of the other four elements or phases, fire, metal, wood or water. In Chinese cosmology, Metal and Water are more Yin and Fire and Wood are more Yang and Earth is a balance of Yin and Yang. Within the Earth large, heavy massive formations are more Yang such as mountains, mesas, large boulders while hills, rocks and the soil are more Yin. This year is a Yang earth year, so we will receive the benefit of this strong, powerful Yang energy. Obviously it will be rather slow moving, but whatever happens will have the resolve of mountains rather than a clump of soil. Tread carefully this year. Go slowly. Plan well. Small actions can have big consequences.

Normally, earth is a very calming energy, but the preponderance of Earth in this dog year will even present a stubborn or recalcitrant energy, making harmonious relationships a bit difficult as negotiations are harmed by the stubbornness of both sides. The huge Mountain which is Yang earth energy presents the possibility for clashes of all sorts as cultures and religions hold fast to their beliefs as an immobile mountain. It can portent a stubborn clinging to regressive ideas while progressive ones are crushed or ignored.

There is also the possibility for earth-based disasters such as earthquakes, landslides and avalanches. Serious earthquakes have happened in previous Earth Dog years.
In Chinese astrology the Dog is active in the month of October. This is the fall of the year in the Northern hemisphere. The mood of fall is one of receding light, the harvest and cooler temperatures. Obviously, this year will run the seasonal temperatures as usual, but expect less heat and warmth from the collective conscious as it responds to the cosmic energies of Dog Year. One can expect a harvesting of some of the initiatives begun in the previous years, especially Rooster year. The Rooster pecks, crows and uses his spurs to kick up things that need to move, then the faithful dog comes behind and picks up the pieces and holds space for things to settle and regain order. But with this settling, is an absence of the optimism. The optimistic fire element is dying which allows the fearful water element to takeover. Hence in the history of Wall Street, there had been Black Octobers (Dog Month) in the stock market crashes of 1929 and 1987. As such, the Dog year can bring decline in economic growth and activities leading to longer term setback of the stock market and more economic crisis will come up. As there will not be return of fire year until 2025, we expect a long lasting bearish market ahead.

The Dog is also considered as storage of fire so there is fire energy hidden inside. This energy once released can also bring about disastrous explosions. In 1945, the second atomic bomb was dropped onto Nagasaki on September 8 which is a metal Dog day but not Dog year. Also radium the radio active substance was first discovered by Madam Curie in 1898, year of earth Dog So it is possible nuclear weapons problem will continue to be an issue.

Metaphysics and Medicine
In Chinese Medicine, earth represents cells and muscles. Cancer is caused by disorder of the cells, hence it is very much related to excessive amount of unfavorable earth elements. 2018 is a very heavy earth year. This will become more serious problem in 2018 and it is necessary to take precautions to minimize inflammation and stagnation in the body. Large amounts of anti-oxidants may be necessary. Earth also represents the spleen, pancreas and stomach. These digestive organs can either flourish in a heavy earth year or be burdened by too muc heaviness and dampness of earth. Be watchful this year that you do not allow yourself to indulge in foods, drink, drugs that will promote these heavy, damp qualities. People with heavy earth in their astrological charts or in their physical bodies should be most cautious. Another area of concern this year is the heart and circulatory system, the fire element. Fire Feeds/creates earth. If earth becomes out of balance, it may draw too heavily on fire and since Fire is underground and not supported this year, it can quickly tax the heart and circulatory system.

Goat and Ox year People
Dog will create an earth penalty with those born in the year of Goat and the Ox. The imbalance of earth for Goat and Ox is called the Three Penalties. The Three Penalty” configuration causes worries, hate, hidden dangers. The heart and blood circulation aspect is related to the fire element, as the Dog means fire enters the grave, it is also unfavorable for people who have weakness of fire elements. A weak heart and blood circulation will bring problem of weak energy, weak heart poor blood circulation. A weak Fire element will also cause stomach/spleen/pancreas problems and diabetes because Fire Feeds Earth. To improve the quality of fire within the body, foods and supplements that encourage the fire element in the body are recommended. In addition, extra caution must be taken in cold winter months to preserve the body’s natural heat mechanisms. This becomes more and more important because the fire element will not return until 2025. It is worse in Earth years because Earth destroys fire. Goat, Ox as well as Dragon should pay attention to the Flying Stars (Compass School Feng Shui) of their homes and offices, even taking into consideration the monthly stars this year. Those with Ox hour pilar sould pay particular attention because this special condition can effect loved ones and spouses.

Dragon Clashes
The animal sign which is most unfavorable this year is the Dragon which is in direct clash with the Dog. Such clashes will usually bring about turbulence, movements, accident or changes. As it is a heavy earth clash, it will stimulate misfortunes related to earth, such as earthquake, mountain disasters, collapse of buildings, landslide, also traffic accidents on the road. People born in the year of the Dragon will anticipate more traveling, or movements such as changing jobs or moving house. It is necessary to carry the pendant of a Rabbit as protection to attract the Dog away. Dragons should also follow all the health recommendations for Goat and Ox, as well as recommendations for cures and enhancements for Flying Star Feng Shui. Dragons are very susceptible to earth or fire related health issues and extra caution is necessary.

There are many examples of health problem caused by excessive amount of earth including Steve Jobs who died of pancreas cancer caused by excessive earth element and David Bowie who was a weak fire person and died of excessive amounts of earth in 2016.

The Yang Earth element, in particular Dog, is complicated element as it is storage of fire containing metal, fire, and earth. The insurance industry and high tech computer business should thrive. As such, Earth Dog year may also bring fast advancement in the internet and computer software business.

The industries that will perform well in the year of the Dog will also be industries related to Wood element. Wood industries are environment, fashion, media, books, education, plants and flowers. Fire industries are productive but not so profitable. Wood naturally controls earth so this element will thrive this year. The other industries of metal, water, earth may not be so prosperous this year.

Yang Earth Dog years in History
In the Chinese Zodiac, there are twelve animal signs. As mentioned earlier, each year is paired the quality of one of the animals, and one of the 5 Elements well as Yin or Yang. Over a 12 year period, each animal will reign one year, paired with a different Element and alternate Yin or Yang. Thus, the rhythm from Dog year to Dog year will be 12 years. However, to arrive at another year with the same animal sign, element, and Yin or Yang, 60 years will pass (5 Elements x 12 Animals). The most recent Dog year was 2006. Previous years were 1994, 1982, 1970, 1958, 1946, 1934, and so on in a rhythm of every 12 years. Some of these years had other sign than Dog and were Yin instead of Yang. The previous Yang Earth Dog years were 1958, 1898 and 1838 and previous years in 60 year increments.

In the most recent Earth Dog Year, 1958, the Microchip was co-invented by Jack Kilby of Texas Instruments and Robert Noyce of Fairchild Semiconductors later developed and marketed in US by Intel. NASA National Aeronautics and Space Administration is formed Is formed and launches the Explorer Spacecraft. The satellite successfully orbited Earth over 58,000 times before it re-entered the atmosphere in 1970. And The Soviet Union successfully launches the Sputnik 3 satellite on May 15th. The satellite carried twelve experiments into space and its mission was to study the composition of the atmosphere and cosmic rays while orbiting the Earth. On the international/ political scene, Nikita Khrushchev becomes Premier of the Soviet Union. Iraq becomes a Republic on July 14th after Military Coup. The United Arab Republic (UAR) was created during February when Egypt and Syria became politically unified. The United Arab Republic was dissolved in September of 1961 when Syria declared itself independent after a military coup. In the automobile industry, Packard Cars end production as the company closes while Toyota and Datsun Cars go on sale in the US. The USS Nautilus, the first nuclear submarine, successfully crossed under the North Pole during August in the first undersea journey to the geographic North Pole. It was also a year of great strife and there was a famine in China which took 30 million lives and recession in the US with 7% unemployment.

The previous Earth Dog year 1898 is primarily consumed by the Spanish America War, precipitated by The USS Maine exploding and sinking in Havana harbor, Cuba, killing 266 men. A Navy investigation later blamed Spain for planting the mine responsible for sinking the Maine. In April of that year, President William McKinley signed a joint resolution with Cuba, declaring war on Spain. Annie Oakley promotes the service of women in combat situations with the United States military. She wrote a letter to President McKinley “offering the government the services of a company of 50 ‘lady sharpshooters’ who would provide their own arms and ammunition should war break out with Spain.” In the United States, the city of New York is geographically divided into five boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, and Staten Island.

1838 saw the first demonstration of the telegraph and Alfred Vail demonstrates a telegraph using dots and dashes (this is the forerunner of Morse code). This year also saw terrible inhumanity. IT was the beginning of the Trail of Tears, forced relocation between 1836 and 1839 of the Cherokee Nation from their lands in Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Alabama to the Indian Territory (present day Oklahoma) in the then Western United States, and the resultant deaths along the way and at the end of the movement of an estimated 4000 Cherokee. In addition this was the year of The Potawatomi Trail of Death was the forced removal by militia in 1838 of some 859 members of the Potawatomi nation from Indiana to reservation lands in what is now eastern Kansas. And Missouri governor Lilburn Boggs issues the Extermination Order, ordering the expulsion of all Mormons from the state.

The year 1778 is during the Revolutionary War between the US and Great Britain. Many terrible battles took place that year with many defeats for the colonists. British loyalists were joined by Native American forces and massacres took place. Among them, the Battle of Monmouth, the Wyoming Massacre, and the Cherry Valley Massacre, all signs the war was not over despite the articles of Confederation first Ratified by South Carolina giving the fledgling Continental Congress power. This is but the first attempt to unite the colonies against British rule. The struggle would continue until 1883 and the Treaty of Paris and yet another decade as it is ratified along with the Bill of Rights. The Franco-American treaty was signed this year and an attempt by the Continental congress to gain military support for its cause. Late in the year, the British took Savanna Georgia, leading the colonists to replace General Robert Howe with General Benjamin Lincoln. In other events, Captain James Cook is the first European to land on the Hawaiian islands.

First, let’s discuss the general properties of any Chinese year. Each year is ruled by an animal sign, an Element (from the 5 Elements of Chinese philosophy) and it is either Yin or Yang. The cycle is regular, following the creative cycle—Earth creates metal, Metal enriches Water, Water feeds Wood, Wood creates Fire and Fire creates Earth.

Each year, certain phases of the Chinese Zodiac roll into power, one at a time. Although they are given animal names, they are but phases of a complete cycle of change. They correspond to constellations in the Chinese Zodiac. These are by no means the only constellations in the Chinese Zodiac, but following a complex formula, the Big Dipper and the placements within the 360 wheel of the entire zodiac, they are the ones considered to influence the years. Every year, this animal will also take on the qualities or flavor of one of the Five Elements Fire, Earth, Metal, Wood and Water. Each year will also alternate between Yin and Yang. Thus, in a 60 year cycle, (roughly the cycle of the Planet Jupiter) we experience each animal, and each element influencing that animal five times. The cycle alternates endlessly from Yang to Yin. Last year was the Yin Fire Rooster, so this year is the Yang Earth Dog. The most recent Dog year was 12 years ago, 2006, and the last Yang Earth Dog was 60 years ago, 1958. A good way to determine how you will be affected by Rooster is to look at how past Rooster years played out in your life.

In Chinese cosmology, a complex system of formulas comprises the divination for each year. Each person is born under his own Four Pillars of Destiny based on year, month, day and time he was born.  The cycle of the 12 Animals of the Zodiac and their relationship to the year, month, day and hour results in the person’s Four Pillars chart. the day on which the new moon falls will divulge the information which portends the influence of the year. This information has four aspects or pillars and the animal is one of these pillars. Each pillar will also have one of the  5 elements and be Yin or Yang.

In the Western astrology, the Sun sign is considered “You,” and a suitable comparison in Eastern astrology is assumed to be the year pillar. The year pillar is also the most easily accessible without complicated software, and the animal sign attached to it is easy to relate to. However, the year pillar is much more universal in Eastern Astrology than the sun sign in Western astrology. EVERYBODY born in your year has the same year pillar. The Four Pillars in Chinese astrology are not based solely on the position of the planets and the Sun the day you were born as in Western astrology. Expert Western and Eastern astrologer, Malvin Artley, says it best:

Hence, … we see that to find direct correspondences between Chinese and Western astrology is not so cut and dried. It is better if one reads the Chinese chart more on its own merits, and then see how the Eastern and Western systems support and complement each other. It has been my experience that they rarely contradict each other.[1]

The Year Pillar: In Chinese astrology, the year pillar is the year you were born. Everyone born in one year has the same year pillar, hense it signifies more universal qualities and represents the place of that group of people in society. In eastern Western, your year signifies the degree of the 360° wheel where the Sun resides at your birth.

The Month Pillar: Let’s set aside for a moment that the Chinese calendar is different from the Gregorian calendar ususally used for Western astrology. The traditional Chinese calendar is a lunisolar calendar which reckons years, months and days according to astronomical phenomena. In the Chinese calendar the days begin and end at midnight. The months begin on the day with the dark (new) moon. The years begin with the dark moon near the midpoint between winter solstice and spring equinox. The solar terms are the important components of the Chinese calendar. In a month there are one to three solar terms. the month pillar is the solar calendar with it’s designations of an animal sign (Earthly Branch) and either Yin or Yang (Heavenly Stem.) This pillar is examined in light or the yearly, daily and hourly pillar and their stems and branches for compatibility, conflicts, etc. In Western Astrology, the Month signifies the degree of the 360° wheel at which the moon resides at the birth.

The Day Pillar: This more closely corresponds with the moon, as each of the twenty-four lunar mansions has roughly a one-day sojourn by the moon, although that is widely variable in Chinese astronomy. This again, though, is a combined soli-lunar influence, because the day also represents the degree of the sun, since the sun ‘moves’ a roughly degree a day. The Day pillar also has Heavenly stems and Earthly Branches and the Day Pillar is interpretd through these attributes as copared to the Year, Month and Hour pillar. In Western Astrology, the day and the hour determine all the placements of the Sun, Moon and planets in the 360° wheel.

The Hour Pillar: This is the closest we come to the ascendant in Western astrology, although if we want to be really  particular, the Minute Pillar would represent the ascendant, or ascending degree. The hour pillar would then represent the rising sign in general, but not the degree, keeping in mind that the Chinese ‘hours’ are two Western hours in length. And, like the other pillars, is interpreted considering Stems and Branches.

The more traditional interpretation of the Four Pillars are as follows:
Year Pillar—Who you are in how one interfaces with culture at large
Month Pillar —Ancestors – primary conditioning – how others see you
Day Pillar—The self – health, wealth, associations, how you see yourself
Hour Pillar – The hidden self – how one acts under pressure

Thus, consider your Day and Hour pillar when planning your year and anticipating how things might affect you..
So All the Best for Yang Earth Dog Year! Health, Wealth, and Happiness!! Happy New Year!

"The highest goodness resembles water

Water greatly benefits myriad things without contention

It stays in places that people dislike

Therefore it is similar to the Tao"
